Summer Cruise NZ 2008
After arriving back in NZ in November 07 and an intense 3 months of maintenance that had been deferred while crossing oceans, “Janice of Wyoming” is ready to go cruising. It is February, summertime in NZ and we are going sailing.
February 7th 2008
It’s a beautiful. summer day in Auckland, with crew and owners aboard we set sail for a short afternoon cruise to Bon Accord harbour, located in Kawau Island were we are to spend a couple of days. With the yacht safely at anchor the descision is made to slide up the head of Bon accord harbour and set the Flounder net for the evening.
February 8th 2008
Up early and off to check the Flounder net……1 Schnapper, 4 Sprats and a Mullet but no Flounder. The remainder of the day is spent swimming, going ashore for walks around the island and generally just chilling out.
February 9th 2008
Let’s go fishing. We move around Kawau Island to a likely looking fishing spot to try our luck for a couple of hrs, fishing lines out, diver down and 2 hrs later we have a feed of fresh Schnapper and Scallops for dinner. The weather is starting to look a little nasty so we choose a safe anchorage for the evening at Mahurangi harbour.
February 10th 2008
Breeze is up; it is a perfect time to go sailing.
With the wind puffing around 20-25 knots from the north we head off towards the bottom end of Waiheke Island were we will anchor for the night. The sailing could not have been better and everybody is all smiles as we pull into “Man O’ War bay were we are to stay for the night.
February 11th 2008
It is time to head back to Auckland for a short break before sailing north up the east coast to the “Bay of Islands”.
February 20th 2008
We sail to Russell located in the Bay of Islands, another stunning day which is perfect for sailing up the coast.

At the end of the day everybody back onboard we sail south across the bay several miles to Mangonui Harbour were we settle down in the estuary for the night.

We need to start heading south fairly soon as the weather is going to start changing for the worst, but before we go we have to visit the Mangonui “Fish’n chip shop” reputed to be the best fish\’n chips in the north. With our tummies full of tasty fish\’n chips it is time to move on. We sail south of the Bay of Islands to Whangaruru to lay over for the evening.
February 29th 2008
The crew is up early for a quick Scallop dive before heading further south.
A big feed of Scallops aboard and we are off to Kawau for the night before heading onto Auckland ahead of the nasty weather coming down the coast behind us.
March 1st 2008
We depart Kawau in the middle of a very nasty blow that has come from the north overnight and make our way back to Auckland. Timing is everything as we manage to arrive back into the viaduct during a lull in the weather. It is decided that we will spend the next few days in Auckland, allowing the guests to take in the local sights, enjoy some golf and catch up with some old friends etc before they leave the yacht.
“Janice of Wyoming” and her crew will remain in Auckland until their next adventure in May 2008 were she will then sail to “Vauvau, located in the Kingdom of Tonga. In the meantime there is lots to be done. A mast to be removed and checked, painting to be done and equipment to be checked and so the list goes on.
